AUGUSTA, Maine — State officials are reporting that nearly 46,000 Maine households have been approved to receive heating assistance funding so far this heating season.
That’s nearly as many households as received funding for all of last winter from the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. About 50,000 households received aid last year.
MaineHousing Director Dale McCormick says nearly $28 million in heating assistance benefits have been paid so far. She expects about 70,000 Maine households to receive LIHEAP funds by the time heating season is over.
The average benefit is expected to be about $940, which is about $200 more than last year’s average.
