GREENVILLE, Maine — The Maine Department of Transportation has restored a year-round crew to the Shirley garage much to the pleasure of Greenville town officials and motorists in the Moosehead Lake region.

The announcement of the change came Wednesday when Town Manager John Simko

recapped for selectmen a meeting he and other town officials had with a DOT official earlier in the week.

“I take it as good news, I think it’s going to improve the roads up here,” Simko said Friday.

Things had been working well in the region for winter maintenance up until 2004 when the DOT, through a reorganization effort, split the maintenance of Route 6/15 among two crews. One crew maintained the road from downtown Greenville intersection to Rockwood, and the other crew maintained the road from the intersec-tion to Shirley.

Since the weather varied between the region, motorists found that one section of the road was maintained well and the other not as well maintained for the weather conditions, according to Simko.

“A whole lot of things” precipitated the change, Stan Warren, DOT crew supervisor II, said Saturday. “We’re putting it in to see how we can make it work and make it better.” He said the change should bring some continuity to the summer and winter road conditions.

Warren said a crew supervisor, two drivers, and a spare driver will work from the Shirley garage which will now be open year round. That crew will maintain and plow from the Shirley/Monson town line to the East Outlet of Moosehead Lake. The crew also will be responsible for tree and water problems on the Lily Bay and East Roads, he said.

Simko said last year there were basically two plow drivers: one who answered to the Guilford garage and the other to the Jackman garage.

“It didn’t work so good,” he said.
