STARKS, Maine — The deaths of a dozen exotic birds at a home in the Somerset County town of Starks is under investigation by the state veterinarian.
Starks Fire Chief Julie Costigan says the parrots, parakeets and cockatiels died Sunday within a half hour of each other.
Fire crews from three towns checked for fumes or possible carbon-monoxide poisoning, but there was no sign of the deadly gas and no evidence that the chimney was plugged.
Costigan said she was saddened by the deaths. She said some of the birds were paired off as mates, and there was one that was sitting on a nest of eggs.
