Cianbro receives OSHA recognition for 1 million hours without injury

By Sharon Kiley Mack, BDN Staff

PITTSFIELD, Maine — The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the SafetyWorks Program of the Maine Department of Labor have awarded special recognition to Cianbro’s Fabrication Facility for logging more than 1 million work hours since its last lost-time injury in 2002.

More than 85 structural fabricators and support staff members work at the Fabrication Facility on Detroit Avenue in Pittsfield.

The Cianbro Cos. were host to a celebration luncheon Monday for fabrication employees that was attended by Maine Labor Commissioner Laura Fortman, Bureau of Labor Standards Director Dave Wacker, Cianbro Vice President Alan Burton, and General Manager Jack Klimp from Cianbro’s Fabrication Facility.

The Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program, or SHARP, is the highest honor that OSHA awards to small work sites across the nation. The award acknowledges Cianbro’s ongoing emphasis on workplace safety and health.

With the SHARP recognition, company officials said it is evident that the fabrication team puts safety first, looks out for one another, is active in Cianbro’s safety processes, and shows a commitment to ongoing training.

“SHARP is designed to provide incentives and support to smaller business owners to develop, implement and constantly improve effective safety and health programs at their work sites,” OSHA Regional Administrator Marthe Kent said. “SHARP participation initially grants the business owner up to a two-year exemption from an OSHA-scheduled inspection if their work site continues to protect the safety and health of its workers and, after this exemption period is over, the employer may be awarded a renewal of up to a two-year exemption.”

Cianbro Fabrication and Coating Corp. is the fabrication and coating subsidiary of the Cianbro Companies, specializing in fabrication and coatings services for clients throughout North America.
