PEAKS ISLAND, Maine — A well-known Bangor area broadcaster died Sunday on Peaks Island.

Don Perry, who was 67 at the time of his death, spent his career in radio and television, starting at WGUY Radio in Bangor shortly after his graduation from Brewer High School in 1959.

Perry went on to hold positions at WABI Radio, as a news director and anchor at WVII Channel 7 and then as an announcer at WPBC Radio.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1963 through 1966, stationed in Hawaii.

Besides his work in front of the microphone and camera, Perry helped mold future broadcasters as an instructor at the New England School of Communications, now known as NESCOM, where he also served on the school’s program advisory committee.

“Don was one of the original founders of the school,” Ben Haskell, academic dean at NESCOM, said Monday.

“He was meticulous in his instruction and in his attention to details,” Haskell said, adding that those were qualities that his former students continue to appreciate long after their graduations.

George Wildey, now retired and living in Florida, also was among the school’s original faculty members.

“He was very efficient. Don’t get me wrong, he also had a sense of humor, but it was all business with Don,” Wildey said Monday.

“He spent as much time with his students as they wanted,” often staying behind after classes ended, Wildey said.

“He really made an impression on them. They always remembered him and asked about him when they came back,” Wildey said.

Perry is survived by his mother, Marion J. (Morrison) Perry; his wife, Barbara Rockafellow Perry of Peaks Island; and his daughter and son-in-law, Holly Ann and David Sullivan, and their children, Shay and Sydney, of Marlborough, Mass.

A funeral service has been set for 10:30 a.m. Friday at Brackett Memorial Methodist Church at 3 Church St., Peaks Island. Interment with military honors will follow at Pond Grove Cemetery, also on Peaks Island.
