SEARSPORT – Melvin H. Bryant, 80, passed away Dec. 13, 2008, in Belfast, after suffering a stroke. He was born Dec. 17, 1927, in Belfast, the son of Elmer F. and Evelyn R. (Hutchins) Bryant. He attended Belfast schools and then went to work in the family business, Bryant’s Dairy. He married Hazel Richards, June 25, 1947. After his father sold the dairy, he went to work at Northern Chemicals-Delta, until his retirement in 1993. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed attending ball games at Searsport and Belfast high schools, especially when his son, Dennis “Bear,” coached football. He also enjoyed watching the Red Sox play. Melvin liked doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles. He loved spending time with family, discussing sports or watching the younger ones, who are now his great-grandchildren. He was anxiously awaiting the birth of No. 14. Melvin is survived by his wife, Hazel of Searsport; four children, Susan Bryant of Belfast, Douglas Bryant and wife, Sherry, of Bath, Duane Bryant and Patricia Dyke, both of Rumford; daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Bryant of Belfast; eight grandchildren, Michael Bryant, Melissa Bryant, Monica Furrow, Danny Bryant, Karen Winters, Jay Merrill, Jennifer Metcalf and Julie Dorset; three sisters, Avis Peters, Arlene Herrick and Natalie Dean; 13 great-grandchildren and several cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Carlton; and his son, Dennis “Bear.” Family and friends are invited to call 3-6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Belfast United Methodist Church, Mill Lane, Belfast, with the Rev. David Abbott officiating.
