AUGUSTA, Maine — One woman was killed and a second seriously injured in a two car head-on crash Saturday night on Interstate 95 in Augusta.

State police spokesman Steve McCausland said in a press release that a car driven by Tara Gamwell, 25, of Portland crossed the median and overturned several times into the path of a second vehicle driven by 19-year-old Amanda Garwood of Winthrop.

Garwood died in the crash, which took place in the northbound lane, just north of Exit 109 about 8:15 p.m. Saturday. The interstate was closed for more than two hours at the crash site.

Gamwell suffered multiple injuries and is being treated at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. The crash was reported.

Troopers are investigating why Gamwell’s car went out of control and into the other lane.
