BREWER, Maine — A local woman suffered multiple injuries Wednesday after she was struck by a car while crossing North Main Street.
Sharon Look, 62, was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where she remained Wednesday night undergoing treatment for injuries that include a shattered pelvis, bumps and bruises and a black eye, according to Brewer police Officer Rodney Gerald.
Gerald said the accident occurred about 5:45 p.m., as Look was crossing North Main Street, near the Irving station. As Look was crossing, she was struck by an Oldsmobile 88 driven by Mark Swoboda, 40, of Old Town.
Gerald said that Swoboda was unable to see Look, who was under a black umbrella and wearing a dark coat, until it was too late to stop.
Swoboda attempted to swerve around Look, but ended up hitting her with the front driver’s side of his car, Gerald said. In addition, he said, it was dark and raining hard when the accident occurred.
Gerald credited Hampden resident Allen Nygren, a former Bangor firefighter who was among the first on the scene, with providing medical attention until an ambulance arrived. Gerald said that Sgt. Scott Young of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department helped with traffic control.
