Host of reality show ‘Extreme Trains’ from Maine

By Aimee Dolloff, Special to the BDN

A colleague brought to my attention this week a new reality show that aired last month on the History Channel. My first thought was that reality shows on the History Channel must be far from the entertaining drama you all know I love, but upon further investigation I must admit I was wrong. And what’s even better is that the host of this new show is a Maine train conductor who truly is living the dream.

Above-mentioned colleague brought me a copy of The Boston Globe that contained a short feature on “Extreme Trains,” which premiered last month but continues to chug along.

The show is hosted by Matt Brown, who The Globe says was a student at the University of Maine when he realized his passion for trains wasn’t just a boyhood fantasy. He left the university and started working as a conductor for Conrail Boston, then on to what is now Pan Am Railways.

An open casting call eventually led him to be selected as the host for “Extreme Trains,” which provides an inside look at the machines and people of America’s railways and the role they’ve played in our country’s past.

According to The Boston Globe article, Brown’s Dec. 23 adventure will air at 10 p.m. on the History Channel to provide viewers with an inside look at the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus train. My DVR will be set to record.

Speaking of extreme, it’s the holiday season and I’m still waiting for my “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” pink tool belt.

For the reality TV fanatic on your shopping list, there are plenty of options out there. CBS has a variety of “Survivor” paraphernalia from buffs (the bandana thingy worn by the contestants) to mugs and T-shirts. There’s also the “Survivor” board game for those who just can’t get enough.

Got a “Dancing With the Stars” junkie in your life? Get them moving with the Latin Cardio Dance DVD and dancewear available at the ABC online store.
