Maine high on list of healthiest states

The Associated Press

All six New England states score high on the latest ranking of the healthiest states.

For the second year, Vermont is number 1. New Hampshire ranks third and Massachusetts is sixth in rankings by the United Health Foundation, the American Public Health Association and the Partnership for Prevention.

Connecticut ranked seventh, followed by Maine at ninth and Rhode Island at eleventh.

The report said New Hampshire’s strengths include a low percentage of children in poverty, high immunization rates, a low violent crime rate and a low infant mortality rate. It says the state’s challenges include moderate public health funding.
