Mark your calendar: ‘Toyland’ time

Posted Dec. 03, 2008, at 8:19 p.m.

One of the most kid-friendly Christmas events around this season is The Grand theater’s charming production of “Babes in Toyland,” set for 7 p.m. Dec. 4-6, 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7. Although the cast includes around 20 teenagers and adults, the majority of the more than 50-person cast is made up of kids as young as 4. Dolls, toy soldiers and other toys, gypsies, carolers and townsfolk populate a story filled with memorable characters, such as the young couple at the center of it — Mistress Mary Quite Contrary (Jacqueline Vos) and her boyfriend, Alan (Don Macalinao), who want to be married. Alan’s dastardly Uncle Barnaby, played by Roland Dube, wants Mary for himself, but fortunately his evil plot is foiled. The show is directed by Heather Astbury-Libby. On Saturday, the Ellsworth Christmas Parade starts at 11 a.m., with a float featuring cast members from the show. After the parade, Santa will appear onstage to greet children before the 3 p.m. performance. Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for seniors, $9 for children. For more, visit www.grandonline.org.
