By

ORONO, Maine — The University of Maine women couldn’t find much consolation in Saturday afternoon’s Dead River Company Classic consolation game.

New Jersey Institute of Technology guard Jessica Gerald torched the Black Bears for 26 points on 14-for-16 shooting from the free throw line to lead the Highlanders to a 68-60 basketball victory at Alfond Arena. It was the first win of the season for the Highlanders, who are now 1-4.

Brittany Boser came off the bench to lead the Maine women in scoring with 16 points and Samantha Baranowski added 13. The Black Bears are now 1-4.

West Virginia University won the tournament with a 66-49 victory over Brown University in Saturday afternoon’s championship game.

Mountaineers guard Takisha Granberry was named tourney MVP. Members of the all-tournament team are Gerald, University of Maine freshman forward Samantha Baranowski, Courtney Lee and Sadiea Williams of Brown, and WVU’s Liz Repella.

Boser won a scholar-athlete award from Dead River.
