HALLOWELL, Maine — Maine’s scallop fishermen are having their fishing times cut back.

The Department of Marine Resources advisory council voted Wednesday to let scallop draggers and divers go out for 70 days for the upcoming season, from Dec. 1 to Jan. 4 and again from Feb. 25 to March 31.

That’s a nearly 50 percent decrease from the Dec. 1 to April 15 season that has been in place for the past several years. Fishermen will also have a daily catch limit of 200 pounds in state waters.

Officials say the new rules are necessary to help the ailing scallop resource and give it time to bounce back. But fishermen say they’ll be put in tough straits.
