AUGUSTA, Maine — Don’t put in too many bills. Make sure you return phone calls. And don’t introduce off-the-wall legislation.
Those are some of the tips offered Wednesday to freshmen entering the Maine Senate and House. The first-time lawmakers were elected last week and will be sworn into office Dec. 3. Of Maine’s 186 legislators, 56 are brand new to the State House and several others are returning after a hiatus.
The new lawmakers are attending sessions on everything from bill filing and pay to parking rules and Capitol security.
Departing Senate President Beth Edmonds urged the new lawmakers to avoid a freshman mistake: submitting too many bills. In particular, she says it’s important to avoid duplication of bills. Lawmakers were also advised to return constituents’ phonecalls.
