Piscataquis County commissioners to discuss budget today

DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — The Piscataquis County commissioners will hold a special sesion at 8:30 a.m. today in the courthouse to discuss the budget and the budget advisory committee’s recommendations.

The committee has recommended that only $4,713 be included in the Unorganized Township budget for the Moosehead Junction Wharf Project instead of $10,000, and they have recommended that the commissioners remove the $20,000 included in the budget for the road inventory.

Regarding the latter, the commissioners awarded a contract last week for the work.

Of the county budget, the committee recommended that all salaries be held to a cost-of-living increase that would not exceed 3 percent for all employees except those under the union contract.

County Manager Mike Henderson said the county could no longer use revenue earned by the county for boarding federal prisoners to offset the county budget. Under new state law, the revenue must be placed into a dedicated account and used for jail purposes only, he said.
