ATKINSON, Maine — Voters on Tuesday approved the sale of alcohol — beer, wine and liquor— within the town. The vote was 118-76. According to some residents, Atkinson had always been a dry town.

Resident Randy Tozier, who circulated a petition signed by 32 people to bring the vote, said he promoted the referendum to help the Piscataquis County town’s only business and to keep the money local.

Lois Johnson, manager of Snow’s Saw Shop, a convenience store, said Wednesday her boss, Dennis Warren, is considering the possibility of selling alcohol in the store. The store no longer sells gasoline and the sale from alcohol could help offset that loss of revenue, she said.
