AUGUSTA, Maine — A conservative think tank is turning in petitions for three citizen initiatives that it hopes to put on the state referendum ballot in November 2009.

The Maine Heritage Policy Center says some 200,000 voter signatures have been collected in support of measures that would require voter approval of tax increases, slash excise taxes on automobiles and expand affordable health insurance choices in Maine.

The center said that in conjunction with another group, Maine Leads, it is submitting three initiatives at one time Monday to the Secretary of State’s Office, a feat that has never been accomplished in Maine.

The signatures were collected at the polls last November and during subsequent efforts by volunteers.
