SURRY – Renowned cellist, George Sopkin, 94, died Oct. 28, 2008, in Surry. George was co-founder of the Fine Arts Quartet and a distinguished professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Later he was part of the New England Piano Quartett and Carnegie-Mellon Trio, was on the faculty at Kneisel Hall, Blue Hill and received the Chevalier du Violincelle Award. George was predeceased by beloved wife, Carol. He is survived by daughters, Nicky D’Attilio and Paula Friedman and John of Milwaukee; grandchildren, Daniel D’Attilio and Mika Fukuda, Matthew D’Attilio and Michelle, Mackey Friedman, and Kate Friedman and Bryan; and great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Sophia D’Attilio, Ren D’Attilio and Isaac Friedman.
