YOKOSUKA, Japan and BREWER – Alan David DeWitt, 50, died Oct. 21, 2008, in Yokosuka, Japan, with his mother and fiancee by his side. He was born Feb. 27, 1958, in Bangor. Alan attended schools in Bangor and Brewer. He loved camping, fishing, skiing and other sports. He joined the Navy when he was 18, retiring 22 years later. Alan was stationed at the U.S. Naval Air Station, Cecile Field Florida. He served on the Midway and several other aircraft carriers. Alan served during the first gulf war and subsequently as an air traffic controller and supervisor of other air traffic controllers. He spent the remainder of his Navy career at the U.S. Navy Air Operations Department, Atsugui, Japan. Alan is most remembered by loved ones and friends for his giving spirit and love for everyone around him. Alan is survived by his mother, Charlene R. Bjorn and stepfather, John C. Bjorn of Dedham; his father, James A. DeWitt and his wife, Gwen, of Ellsworth; his sister, Cathy DeWitt Kowalski and her husband, Paul, of Allen, Texas; his beloved brother, James P. DeWitt of Bangor; his fiancee and soul mate, Matsushima (Kazuko) of Japan; two precious daughters, May and Eimi DeWitt living in Japan; two stepsisters, Rozalind Bjorn Cole of Haverhill, Mass., and Pam Bjorn Peck and her husband, Thomas, of Frankfort; one stepbrother, Preston Bjorn and his wife, Jeanna, of Hampden; two stepbrothers, Winfield Stratton Jr. and his wife, Lisa and Alan Stratton and wife, Ann Marie; a stepsister, Corean Baughman and her husband, Ron; three aunts, Ethel Grant and her husband, Leslie, of Sebring, Fla., Carolyn Duplisses of Bangor and Betty Emery and her husband, Roland, of Newburgh; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his grandfather, Clement Violette and his grandmother, Miriam (Babe) Violette, formerly of Old Town and Winterport; his grandfather, Kenneth DeWitt and grandmother, Dot DeWitt, formerly of Old Town and Clearwater, Fla.; a special stepbrother, Rob Bjorn, formerly of Hampden and Old Town; and cousin, Clement Grant of Winterport. A memorial service will be held noon Saturday, Nov. 1, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, with the Rev. Robert T. Carlson officiating. Visiting hours will be held 10 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
