EASTPORT – Larkin Miriah McGarvey, my beloved daughter, passed away Oct. 25, 2008, after a long illness. Larkin was born Jan. 5, 1980, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, to William and Margaret McGarvey. Larkin had leukemia, due to her presence as a paramedic in New York City during the Sept. 11 attacks. Her actions during that time of need exemplify her love of people and her desire to help others. She leaves behind her mother, Meg; her brother, Joel and his fiance, Lexie; her half brother, Skip McGarvey and family; her aunt, Nancy Asante; her cousin, Asiedua Asante and her husband, Jerome Simian, of Lyon, France; aunts, Louise Mitchell and Judy Kelly; uncles, Kwasi Asante of Switzerland and Winston of England. Close cousins include, Bud Finch and Mary Pottle of Eastport; her dear sweet “uncles,” Tom and Andy Mitchell of New Hampshire and many more. Breaking trail for Larkin were her dad, Bill; her grandmother, Alice Otis; her great-aunt, Ruth Brown and her uncle, Ralph. Our thanks to Dr. Ali and the staff at Eastport Health Center; to Dr. Brazier and the staff at Calais Regional; and to the doctors and staff at Eastern Maine Medical Center for their skillful care, patience and support of Larkin and the family through the years. And our deepest gratitude and love to Toni Dubeau of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, who was a bright, shining presence in our lives as Larkin faced her many challenges. Larkin, who graduated from Maine School of Science and Math, and attended the University of Maine, Orono, was a member of Eastport City Council and volunteered with several community groups. She had many friends in Eastport and Pleasant Point Ambulance crews, with whom she worked, and she had great affection for the men of Eastport Police Department, on whom she often turned her wit and humor. A memorial gathering will be held to honor Larkin’s life 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, at the Boat School, Eastport. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to “Larkin’s School Supply Fund” to support the students and teachers at Eastport Elementary School. Donations may be dropped off at the school or sent to Meg McGarvey, 2A Pleasant St., Eastport, ME 04631. “Goodbye, my sweet child.”
