ROCKLAND, Maine — A local man was killed early Sunday when the ATV he was driving crashed into a large rock and landed in a grove of trees.

James Ward, 30, died sometime between midnight and 8 a.m. Sunday, when he was discovered dead on Thompson Road, a gravel lane between Old County and West Meadow roads. Police were notified of the situation at 8:06 a.m.

Deputy Police Chief Wallace Tower said Ward was traveling east on Thompson Road when his ATV left the roadway, struck the rock, catapulted into the air and landed in trees. Tower said excessive speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the accident.

Sgt. Donald Finnegan, Patrolman Tony Camporiale and the Maine Warden Service investigated the accident.
