Updated:

CALAIS, Maine — City councilors Thursday night appointed Sgt. David Randall the new police chief effective Nov. 2.

City Manager Diane Barnes recommended Randall, 43, who has been the acting chief since Michael Milburn resigned for health reasons in June.

“I have had the opportunity to observe David’s performance over the last [few] months, and I feel very confident that he can handle the position and do a really great job for the Police Department and the commu-nity,” Barnes said.

His salary was set at $48,717.

Thursday’s council vote was unanimous.
