ST. FRANCIS, Maine — A local woman who shot herself in the chest in a suicide attempt Friday night was found alive about two hours later.

The unidentified woman left home with a loaded .357 handgun and had walked a distance to a gravel pit where she shot herself, according to Lt. Douglas Tibbetts.

When the woman’s husband returned home and discovered his wife and the handgun were missing, he called the Maine State Police, who responded to the call, Tibbetts said.

Warden Jeff Spencer of the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, who lives in the area, and his K-9 went to the scene.

Bridger, Spencer’s dog, picked up the woman’s scent and followed her trail to the gravel pit where Spencer found the woman.

The woman was taken to Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent, according to Tibbetts.
