PORTLAND, Maine — More than 28,000 Maine voters already have cast their ballots, even though the presidential election is nearly two weeks away.

Deputy Secretary of State Julie Flynn said voters by Wednesday morning had requested 70,654 absentee ballots and had returned 28,956 of them.

In 2004, about 166,000 absentee ballots were cast in Maine, or 22 percent of the 740,752 votes cast for president that year.

Town and city clerks say they are expecting record numbers of absentee ballots to be cast this election.
