By Diana Bowley, BDN Staff

The Springfield owner of a Granite Hill cabin had been away Sunday when fire leveled his ranch-style cabin. Fire-fighters initially feared Grafton Burke had perished in the fire, but Burke returned to his property at about 6:54 a.m. on Monday, Springfield Fire Chief Joe Wood said Monday. His six dogs, however, died in the fire, he said.

Investigators with the State Fire Marshal’s Office was on scene Monday but could not determine the cause or ori-gin of the fire because of the extent of damage.
