TROY — The driver of the pickup truck involved in a fatal accident early Sunday morning on Route 220 has been charged with manslaughter and aggravated operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants and jailed on $250,000 cash bail.

Detroit resident Charles Erickson, 30, driver of a 1987 Chevrolet pickup that rolled over at 1:50 a.m. Sunday, appeared in Waldo County Superior Court Monday afternoon, said Steve McCausland of the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Erickson was carrying two passengers when his truck skidded off Route 220 and rolled over when the driver lost control and tried to overcorrect the skid, police said.

One of the passengers, Scott Goulette of Detroit, died at the scene from injuries sustained in the accident, said McCausland.

Goulette was sitting in the middle of the cab at the time of the crash, and the roof partially collapsed on him when the truck rolled over and he received a head injury, McCausland said.

Three other state troopers assisted Trooper Thomas Welch, who is in charge of the investigation, at the scene, McCausland said.

Erickson is being held in the Waldo County Jail.
