PORTLAND, Maine — A Portland police officer is recovering after a homeless man allegedly attacked him at a soup kitchen.

Police say Officer Robert Pelletier was called to the Wayside Soup Kitchen at 6:35 p.m. Thursday to remove 50-year-old Ricardo Bennett, who had been banned from the facility.

When Pelletier attempted to arrest Bennett after he refused to leave, Bennett allegedly struck Pelletier in the face and torso several times and knocked him to the ground.

Other officers responded and took Bennett into custody. He is charged with assaulting a police officer, criminal trespass and refusing to submit to arrest.

Pelletier was treated for broken ribs, a facial cut and other injuries. He is expected to take several weeks to recuperate.
