Maine sport fishermen upset at commercial boats

The Associated Press

SACO, Maine — Sport fishermen in southern Maine are upset at commercial fishing boats that have been coming close to shore in search of schools of menhaden.

With new restrictions on herring fishing in the Gulf of Maine, some commercial fishermen have taken to netting the menhaden, which are also known as pogies, in Saco Bay.

Recreational fishermen say it’s been at least 10 years since they’ve seen large numbers of pogies in the bay, and they’ve been startled by the large fishing boats from Massachusetts working so close to shore.

Maine Marine Patrol officials say they’ve gotten calls about the commercial boats, but that no laws are being broken.
