BELFAST, Maine — City police are investing the brazen theft overnight Sunday of a truck, trailer and tractor from Belfast Area High School. The truck was recovered Monday morning, but the trailer and a piece of equipment remain missing.

“It looks like that’s what they were after,” Police Chief Jeffrey Trafton said Monday.

Trafton said the theft was reported at 7:46 a.m. when a school employee arrived for work. He said the one-ton truck, and the trailer with the 1998 Ford tractor with a bucket on the front had been parked at the school.

Trafton said a school employee had seen the truck and trailer Sunday night and “thought it was strange” that school-owned equipment was on the road on a weekend night.

The one-ton truck was found parked on Old Searsport Road off U.S. Route 1 a short time after the theft was reported.

The missing equipment is estimated to be worth $12,000.
