BANGOR – William T. Matthews, 64, passed away Jan. 17, 2005, at a Bangor hospital after a long illness. William was born May 24, 1940, in Pittsfield, son of Thomas P. Matthews and Natalie W. (Doherty) Perry. He was the husband of Anh T. Matthews, who passed away in 1976. William attended Newport High School, and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1958. He served in Vietnam and was honorably discharged as staff sergeant in 1969. From 1969 to 1975, he was employed as a U.S. Army civilian contractor, responsible for communication support to Free World Forces in South-East Asia. In his free time, he was an avid reader, golfer and loved spending time with his friends. William is survived by two sons and two daughters, Beerly Matthews of Wells, Nhan Matthews of Thomaston, Mai Matthews of Oceanside, Calif., and Jeannie Matthews of Auburn; two grandchildren, Ashley and Bryant; one brother, Dwayne Matthews; and one sister, Frances Wilcox; and his special friends, Gloria Whitney, Steve Fernald and Kathy Whitney-Fernald and their two children, Stephanie and Nick Dustin. He was predeceased by his two younger brothers, Richard Matthews and Michael Matthews At William’s request, no services were held. Funeral services were provided by Alternative Funeral Services of Auburn.
