OWLS HEAD – Russell W. Woodman, 89, a lifelong resident of Owls Head, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at Knox Center for Long Term Care, Rockland, where he resided the past eight years. Born at South Thomaston, Oct. 19, 1914, he was a son of Arthur C. and Etta F. Brown Woodman. He was educated in local schools. On June 5, 1937, he married Alice White at Owls Head. The Woodmans made their home in Owls Head all their married lives. Mrs. Woodman died Dec. 28, 1989. In earlier years, Mr. Woodman worked as foreman of the Rose Hill Farm in Owls Head. He later worked 19 years with F.J. O’Hara & Son in Rockland and from 1940 to 1983 he worked as a self-employed lobsterman. For many years he also worked with the Town of Owls Head doing road maintenance. He was a longtime active member of Owls Head Baptist Church, where he served more than 40 years as a Deacon and Trustee. He was ultimately honored as a Lifetime Deacon in recognition of his many years of dedicated and faithful service. He influenced the lives of many children as a Sunday School teacher, youth group leader, and provided transportation to any child who needed a ride. With his wife, he greatly enjoyed his grandchildren, having them often for overnights and trips to Burger King. Mr. Woodman is survived by two sons and their wives, Timothy and Joan Woodman, Carl and Linda Woodman, all of Owls Head; one sister, Beatrice Butler of Rockland; four grandchildren, Michael Woodman of Fairfield, Dawn Watkinson, Scott Woodman, Jeffrey Woodman, all of Owls Head; four great-grandchildren, Samantha Stanley-Woodman, Brandon Scott Woodman, Grace May Woodman and Jessica Lynn Watkinson all of Owls Head; several nieces and nephews; as well as many caregivers at Knox Center for Long Term Care who have become like family over the past years. The Woodman family invites friends and relatives to visit from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday morning, Dec. 24, at the Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland, where a funeral service will immediately follow. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Owls Head. The Rev. Paul Munro and Harold Carpenter will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of the Owls Head Baptist Church, P.O. Box 81, Owls Head, ME 04854.
