PRESQUE ISLE – Robert D. Graves Sr., 76, died June 12, 2004, at the Aroostook Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Bob was born April 23, 1928, in Mars Hill, the son of William and Harriet Graves. Bob grew up in Mars Hill and at a young age went to work with his father and brothers, Vincent, Donald and Phil, and together they founded Graves Supermarket in the late 30’s. The business grew in Aroostook County with stores in Mars Hill, Caribou, and Presque Isle. When his brothers, Vincent and Donald decided to retire, Bob purchased their shares and was sole owner of Graves’ Supermarkets from 1977, until his retirement in 1993. He spent those 15 years working with his sons, Robert Jr., Greg and Mike, and through his hard work, insight and advice was instrumental in making Graves’ Supermarkets the company it is today. He was a loving husband, a wonderful father and placed the joy and happiness of his family ahead of all else his entire life. No man was ever a harder worker or more humble. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Patricia (Lynch) Graves; his daughter, Ingrid and her husband, Joe Mesimer; daughters, Sheila and her husband, Kevin, and Cindi and her husband, Mike; sons, Robert Jr. and his wife, Lynne, Greg and his wife, Becky, and Mike and his wife, Sue. He was grandfather to 12, Robert III, “Rob,” his wife, Tracie, and their daughters, Aidan and Emma; “Rob’s” sister, Jordyn; Patrick, Ryan, Trevor, Connor and Sean; Caitlin, Jamie, Megan, Quinn and Lauren; and he was predeceased in 1998 by his beloved grandson, Logan, the light of his life. He is also survived by brother, Vincent and his wife, Mildred; sister, Alice Hitchcock; and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by a sister, Margie Gray; and brothers, Donald “Lefty” Graves and Philip Graves. Relatives and friends may call 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Mars Hill United Methodist Church, with Pastor Beth Ann Black officiating. Private committal services will follow at the family cemetery in Presque Isle. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to The Logan P. Graves Foundation, P.O. Box 429, Presque Isle, ME 04769. Graves Shop ‘n Save in Presque Isle will be closed Wednesday between 12 noon and 3 p.m. in honor of Mr. Graves and to allow the associates of Graves to attend the service.
