STARBOARD – Surrounded by his family at home, Pastor George Mac Henderson, 72, entered the arms of his waiting Savior Aug. 23, 2008. For 50 years, he was the extremely active, well-respected and much-loved pastor of Machias Valley Baptist Church. Born Oct. 9, 1935, in Allagash, to parents Charlie and Flo Henderson, he was the middle of nine children. After graduating from New Brunswick Bible Institute, Pastor Henderson moved to Machias to begin a church. In addition to preaching, his radio broadcast, Echoes from the Valley, was heard in the community for many years. Although his first joy was always teaching about the Jesus he loved so deeply, Pastor Henderson was often seen with a hammer or chainsaw, building and fixing, cutting wood and helping others in any way he could, as he lived out his beliefs. His life touched many people in our community and carried over onto many continents. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn (Sprague); his children, Deborah Dodge and husband, Bill, Lori Nehrings and husband, Al, Jeff Henderson and wife, Tracy and Peter Henderson and wife, Cheryl; his grand-children, Evan, Sarah, Leah, Luke, Andrew, Justin, Megha, Emma, Elise, and Ethan; his sisters, Eleanor Hughes, Iona Flippin and Nancy Henderson; his brothers, Gerald, Bill, Bob and Tom Henderson; several other relatives. George was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Lumbert; and a sister, Mary. He is missed so much by his wife and family, but his joy is so great. A fellowship time will be held 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, at Machias Valley Baptist Church, where a celebration of his life will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 1. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Machias Valley Baptist Church, 6 Broadway, Machias, ME 04654, in memory of Pastor Henderson to continue his work. Assistance with arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Machias.
