NORTHPORT – Otto M. Umbreit, 89, died April 23, at a Belfast health-care facility. He was born Sept. 12, 1915, in Cologne, Germany, the son of Paul and Anna (Graf) Umbreit. He attended schools in Germany, where he studied baking. In 1935, he came to the United States where he operated his own bakery on Broadway in New York City. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific. In 1954, he married Franceska Rieger. They honeymooned in Maine where they stayed and bought a chicken farm in Rockport. In the early 60′s they moved to Austria where they ran a Bed and Breakfast for about 10 years. They then returned to Maine and settled in Bayside. Otto was predeceased by his wife of 51 Years, Franceska (Frances) Rieger Umbreit He is survived by two sisters, Herta Berthod and her daughter, Doris Redden and Eleanor Pedar and her daughters, Vickie Padar and Barbara Avocho; also close family friends Karl and Martha Beiser and their daughters, Marguerite and Natalie, Rodney and Susie Boynton and Eunice Schleicher. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Belfast. Gifts in Otto’s memory may be made to the Belfast Free Library, Belfast, or to the Activities Fund at Harbor Hill Health and Rehabilitation Center.
