HOULTON – Louis Sheldon Gartley, 91, died March 30, 2007, at a local hospital. He was born March 2, 1916, in Presque Isle, in what he described as the Porter Block, the son of Murray W. and Annie (Pryor) Gartley. Louis was a veteran who served in the U.S. Navy as a control tower operator. He was married to Heloise Lydia Shea from Woodstock, New Brunswick, for 63 years until her death in 2003. They resided in Houlton for 20 years where Louis worked for various car businesses as a parts man; the last one being London Motors. Louis had an uncanny memory for numbers, and could roll parts numbers off his tongue to anyone who would need to know in the shop. In 1969, he retired and they relocated to Ocala, Fla., until Heloise’s poor health brought them back to Houlton in 1999, to live with their daughter, Sharon. During their time in Florida, they were active members in the United Methodist Church, the Ocala Community Chorus, a bowling league, and enjoyed playing cards with friends and family. Louis is survived by his daughter, Sharon A. Lowrey of Houlton; three grandchildren to whom he was known as “Nampy,” John A. Lowrey of Virginia, Jill R. Brown of Florida, and Thomas O. Lowrey of Houlton; four great-grand-children, James, Christina, Megan and Abigail. Louis’ family gives their appreciation to the various people who have been assisting with his care throughout the past four years. A private family gathering will take place at a later date. A service of Dunn Funeral Home.
