BANGOR – Lorraine Claire (Jalbert) Rhodes, 79, died Sunday, July 6, 2008, after a brief illness in North Carolina, at the home of her son. She was born Feb. 20, 1929, in St. Francis, the eighth of 11 children to Samuel and Delia (Jandreau) Jalbert. Lorraine was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She graduated from the University of Maine – Fort Kent, previously Madawaska Training School, in 1952 and taught elementary school at Loring Air Force Base and other Northern Maine communities for several years. Married Aug. 13, 1953, she and her husband, Dean, raised their four children in Presque Isle and resided in Presque Isle for 35 years. At 17 Dudley St., their home in Presque Isle for 27 years, she nurtured a spectacular flower garden featuring lilies, peonies, lilacs, irises and poppies. She generously and enthusiastically enjoyed sharing the cuttings and bulbs from her floral garden with family, friends and neighbors. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dean Rhodes of Bangor; daughter, Elizabeth and husband, John Perritt, of Wilmington, N.C.; son, John of Efland, N.C.; daughter, Peggy Perry and husband, Chris, of Hilton Head, S.C.; son, Robert and wife, Andrea, of Dracut, Mass.; seven grandchildren, Meredith, Elizabeth and Jack Perritt of Wilmington, N.C., Jack and Ben Perry of Hilton Head, S.C., Joseph and Ryan Rhodes of Dracut, Mass.; and siblings, Maynard of Caribou and Presque Isle, Pat, of Allagash, Ray of Fort Kent, George of Wallagrass, Peggy McGreal and husband, Jimmy, of Portland, and Elizabeth Pecoraro of Fort Kent; many special nieces and nephews. Lorraine was predeceased by four of her brothers, Earl, Ervin, Phil and Rex Jalbert. A memorial will be held to celebrate her life 2 p.m. Sunday, July 20, at Unitarian Universalist Church, 120 Park St., Bangor. Immediately after the memorial service, friends and family will be received at the Rhodes’ home, 214 Broadway, Bangor.
