VEAZIE – John “Jack” H. LaFountain, 82, died Wednesday March 19, 2008, at a Bangor health care facility. He was born May 21, 1925, in Bangor, the son of Francis and Mary (Dolan) LaFountain. Jack graduated from St. Mary’s Grammar School and attended John Bapst High School for two years. In 1942, while awaiting his 18th birthday, he became a member of the Maine State National Guard. Upon honorable discharge, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1943, serving on merchant ships as a member of the Navy Gun Grew, and served in both the Pacific and Atlantic theaters for two and a half years. After the Navy, Jack enjoyed his career with the Bangor Daily News for 42 years as a printer in the composing room. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Muriel (Chandler) LaFountain; son, Richard B. LaFountain of Veazie; brothers, Francis LaFountain of Weston, Mass., and Cyril LaFountain of Sanford; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Mary (Dolan) LaFountain; infant daughters, Mary and Sarah; brothers, James F. LaFountain; twin brothers, William and George LaFountain; and sisters, Mary Getchell and Helen Craig. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, March 21, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Richard McLaughlin, pastor of St. John’s Catholic Church, officiating.
