ETOWAH, N.C. – John L. “Jack” Savage, 83, of Etowah, N.C. died Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Asheville, N.C., following a brief illness. He was born in Brewer, a son of the late Lewis A. and Beryl Spencer Savage. He graduated from Brewer High School, and attended Hebron Academy in Maine and the University of Maine at Orono. An Army Air Corps veteran, he served in the European Theater during World War II. The former owner and operator of Hawthorn Manufacturing in Brewer, he later incorporated Hackett Machine Shop into his business. He retired as a tax collector for the state of Maine, and was a director of the Penobscot Salmon Club. He moved to Henderson County, N.C. in 1991. Surviving is his wife of 54 years, Martha VanDyk Savage; four sons, Richard Savage and his wife, Henri, of Chicago, Ill., Mark Savage and his wife, Brenda, of Brewer, David Savage and his wife, Tammy, of Hagerstown, Md., and Eric Savage of Asheville, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson. No services are planned at this time. Memorials may be made to the Friends of Maine Hockey, Alfond Sports Arena, University of Maine, Orono, ME 04469. Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors and Cremation Memorial Center, Hendersonville, N.C., is in charge of arrangements.
