JOHN ‘FRED’ KANE

BREWER and TUCSON, Ariz. “Fred” Kane died Jan. 14, 2008, after a brief illness, in Tucson, Ariz. Fred was born Jan. 18, 1922, in Bangor, to Thomas P. Kane and Veronica Arsenault Kane. Fred attended Brewer schools and graduated from John Bapst High School, Class of 1940. He went on to the University of Maine, Orono, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Engineering and Physics, in December 1943. After graduating, he was employed with Sperry Gyroscope, Long Island, N.Y., and attained his Master of Science in physics at Columbia University. He accepted a fellowship to Stanford University, Palo Alto, Calif., pursuing his doctorate. Fred had a long and successful career in the aerospace industry. In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by brother, Tom, casualty of World War II; brother, Bill, in 2003; sister, Mary Kane Rooney and her husband, Joseph, in 2007; and brother-in-law, Ken Smith, in 2007. He is survived by sister, Margaret Kane Smith of Green Lake, North Ellsworth. A funeral Mass was held at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Tucson, Ariz. He will be interred in the spring in the family lot at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor.
