NORTH PORT, Fla. – James E. Conley Sr. died April 12, 2007, in Venice, Fla. He was born Nov. 22, 1928, in Portland. James was of the Catholic faith. He served in the Navy from 1946 to 1948 and graduated from the University of Maine in 1952 with a bachelor’s degree in engineering. He was employed by Arnold Machinery Co., Central Equipment Co., and was a former president of Maine Good Roads. James was an avid golfer, a member of Penobscot Valley Country Club and Venice East Golf Association. He was predeceased by two brothers, John and William Conley; his first wife of 43 years, Ruth Ahern Conley; second wife of nine years, Jane Blanchard Conley. Survivors include sister, Elizabeth Brooks; three children, James E. Conley Jr., Carol A. Conley, and Kathleen Houghtaling; four grandchildren, Grace Nash, Elizabeth Preston, Matthew and Sarah Houghtaling; and two grandchildren, Raliegh and Evander Preston. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at Farley Funeral Home, North Port Chapel, Fla., with Catholic Mass and inurnment in Maine at a later date.
