PORTLAND – James C. Veno, 64, of Old Orchard Beach, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007. He was born Feb. 3, 1943, in Portland, a son of Elray and Mary Veno. He graduated from Orono schools and attended the University of Houston. He had a great love for golf, having been the youngest ever to win the Schoolboy Golf Crown at the age of 15. He held several records, honors and titles, having played with such greats as Jack Nicklaus and Sam Snead. Jim Veno was known as one of the state’s best all-time players, and one of two players to win the State Open and State Amateur prior to turning pro. He played in many charity tournaments over the years and recently took his last trip south to golf with friends. He was a member of the MSGA and Maine Golf Hall of Fame. Most recently, Jim was the Director of Golfing Operations at Dunegrass. Jim was the pro and assistant pro in many clubs over the years. He is survived by his longtime companion, two daughters, two brothers, one granddaughter, several nieces, nephews and many friends. A celebration of life ceremony will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are by Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, Portland.
