CARLSBAD, Calif. – Henry Putnam Smiley, 96, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, at home in Carlsbad, Calif. He was born in Haverhill, Mass., and lived in Bangor, before moving his family to Cardiff-by-the Sea, Calif., in 1958. He was a Ford mechanic who retired at age 80, after working most of his career for Peterson and Encinitas Ford. He was also an aviation enthusiast who owned and rebuilt several small aircraft. He was predeceased by his daughter, Sandra; and wife, Serena. Henry is survived by his children, Philip and Robin Smiley, Ardith and Tom Kemp, Priscilla and Pete Hone, Faye Brewster and Julie and Dave Romaine; 12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, extended family members, as well as his co-ed softball team which was recently renamed “Henry’s Team.” A memorial celebration of Henry’s life will be held 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, at Pacific View Baptist Church, 845 Santa Fe Drive, Encinitas, Calif. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Pacific View Baptist Church.
