VINALHAVEN – H. Pauline Geary, 92, a lifelong island resident, died Sunday, July 29, 2007, at the Ivan Calderwood Homestead, after a brief period of declining health. Born July 15, 1915, in Vinalhaven, she was one of three children to Leon and Laura Snowman Sanborn. She attended Vinalhaven schools. In 1934, she married Malcolm H. Hopkins in Vinalhaven. The couple raised three sons. In the early 1950s, she married Harold Poole in Vinalhaven. Together they raised one son. Mr. Poole died in 1964. In 1967, Pauline married Walter Geary. They enjoyed 27 years together until Mr. Geary’s death in 1990. During the 1940s and 1950s, she enjoyed the fellowship found in membership of the Knit-Witts Womens Club. For several years she worked as a teller at the former Knox County Trust Co., Vinalhaven. In later years, she was employed as a certified nurses’ aid at Rockland Convalescent Center. Always a devoted mother and homemaker, Pauline loved cooking, knitting and caring for her grandchildren, but was happiest having her entire family and all their friends visit. Accompanied by her cousin, Flavilla Arey, in 1929, they were the first women to fly in a plane off Vinalhaven. After cremation, Pauline made her final trip by plane across Penobscot Bay, with her son, Bart, Aug. 16. In addition to her husbands, Pauline was predeceased by her sister, Matia Sanborn in 1920; and her brother, Dr. Herbert Sanborn in 1971. She is survived by four sons, Paul Hopkins and his wife, Ruth, of Saco, Larry Hopkins and his wife, Roxana, of Vinalhaven, Bart Hopkins and his companion, Barbara Clark, of Winthrop and James Poole of Vinalhaven; 12 grandchildren, Jane Hopkins of Alameda, Calif., Paula Hopkins of Rockland, Susan Hopkins of Portland, Todd Hopkins and his wife, Carol, of Bath, Jennifer Hopkins of Thomaston, Herbert VanMieghern of Mons, Belgium, James Hopkins and his wife, Angela, Gregory Hopkins, Laura Osgood, Jessica Poole, Harold Poole and James Poole, all of Vinalhaven; 11 great-grand-children, Preston Ames, Matia Hopkins, Kendrick Hopkins, Sienna Hopkins, Kassandra Helen Hopkins, Carolyn Hopkins, Joseph Hopkins, Jason Moody, Hannah Moody, Andrew Moody and Emilie Osgood. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland.
