HOULTON – Gordon H. Bither, 87, died Nov. 28, 2006, at a local health care facility. He was born Nov. 1, 1919, in Houlton, the son of Fred A. and M. Gertrude (Moir) Bither. He graduated from Houlton High School in 1938, Ricker Junior College in 1940 and the University of Maine in 1942. Gordon served with the U.S. Air Force from 1942 until 1946 during World War II. His employment included 10 years of teaching at Ricker Classical Institute and Ricker College and 23 years with the George S. Gentle Company from which he retired in 1982. Always active in his community, Gordon served on the board of SAD No. 29 for 12 years and served on the board of Houlton Housing for the Elderly for 25 years. He served several offices and was a life member of Houlton Lodge of Elks No. 835, a member of Monument Lodge 96 AF&AM, a member of the Chester L. Briggs Post American Legion, former member of the Houlton Rotary Club and the Houlton Community Golf Club and a long time member of the Houlton Methodist Church. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Madeline Brewer Bither; his son, Gordon Haley Bither II of Boston Mass.; and his brother, Fred Alexander Bither of Falmouth. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Dunn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
