BANGOR – George Joseph Brountas, 83, died Aug. 5, 2005, at the Maine Veterans Home, Bangor. He was born Feb. 12, 1922, in Bangor, the son of John N. and Caliope (Harisos) Brountas. George attended Bangor schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942, serving in World War II in Normandy, the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was the recipient of five battle stars. George was employed at Freeses Dept. Store for more than 40 years, where he was manager of the shipping room. He was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church. Surviving are six nieces and nephews, Stacy Sagely, Jamie Bond, John Brountas, Callie Brountas, Athena Brountas and Tom Karas. He will be remembered by a special family friend, Peter Noddin of Bangor. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 90 Sanford St., Bangor, with Fr. Adam Metropoulos, presbyter officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends may make memorial contributions to the Activity Fund at Maine Veterans Home, 44 Hogan Road, Bangor, ME 04401. Arrangements by Foley Funeral Service.
