PRESQUE ISLE – Frank L. Hayes, 91, died Feb. 17, 2008, at a local hospital. He was born Oct. 30, 1916, in Presque Isle, the son of Joseph and Eva (Macey) Hayes. He graduated from Presque Isle High School and attended Aroostook Normal School, Presque Isle. Frank owned and operated Hayes’s Super Service, which later became Presque Isle Volkswagen, until his retirement. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and spending time at his camp on Portage Lake. Frank was an active member of Presque Isle Congregational United Church of Christ, where he had served as a deacon and a trustee for many years. He was a member of Trinity Lodge No. 130 AF & AM, Presque Isle; St. Aldermar Commandery No. 17, Houlton; Garfield Chapter No. 48 Royal Arch Mason, Caribou and Presque Isle Elks Lodge. Frank’s commitment to his community included serving on Presque Isle City Council from 1976 to 1982, chairman in 1979; a director on the Recreations Planning Board, member of the tax assessors board, chairman of Presque Isle Forum Advisory Board, and director and past vice president of Presque Isle Chamber of Commerce. He was past president and member of the Northern Maine Fair Association, served on the Maine State Agriculture Fairs Board and was a past president and mem-ber of the board of directors of the Maine Automobile Dealers Association. Frank also was a member and served on the board of Presque Isle Country Club, Portage Hills Country Club and enjoyed participating in the Senior Golfers League. Frank is survived by his childhood friend and wife of 68 years, Audrey (Hawksley) Hayes; a sister, Alice Survant; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, James Hayes; and his sister, Helen Bryant. There will be no calling hours. Memorial services and Masonic memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at Presque Isle Congregational Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Robert Grove-Markwood and officers and members of Trinity Lodge No. 130 AF & AM. A reception will be after in the fellowship area of the church. A spring interment will be at Fairmount Cemetery, Presque Isle. Those who wish may make donations in his memory to Presque Isle Congregational Church Building Fund.
