HAMPDEN – Elise (Hill) Turner, 49, passed away Thurs-day, Aug. 14, 2008, in Bangor, after a long struggle with biliary tract cancer. She was born May 3, 1959, in Portsmouth Va., the daughter of George C. and Anita C. Hill. Elise was a member of All Souls Congregational Church, Bangor, where she was member of the choir. Elise’s friends will remember her beautiful singing voice, her intelligence, her humor, her love of the theater, and her kindness and love for her friends and family. Elise enjoyed an accomplished career as a computer scientist. She received her Ph.D. from Georgia Tech. She was an associate professor and chair of the Computer Science Department at the University of Maine, where she taught and did research in artificial intelligence and natural language processing. She was a member of the ACM and IEEE computer science professional societies and Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, AAAI. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Roy Turner; her daughter, Kathrina; her sister, Anita Robinson and brother-in-law, Jodie Robinson, and their son, Jodie, of Opelika, Ala. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at All Souls Congregational Church, 10 Broadway, Bangor, with the Rev. Dr. James L. Haddix, pastor and teacher, and the Rev. Renee U. Garrett, M. Div., minister of Christian nurture, officiating. Interment will be afterward at Mount Hope Cemetery. Relatives and friends are welcome to share conversation and refreshment in the church vestry after interment.
