MACHIASPORT – Eldridge Leman Small passed away June 26, 2007, at the Marshall Health Care Facility, Machias. He was born April 23, 1921, in Machiasport, the son of Essie Maude Johnson and Leland Arthur Small. Eldridge attended schools in South Portland, Bangor and vocational school in Dexter. Eldridge was an excellent woodworker, machinist, fisherman and was interested in many different activities. He was predeceased by the mother of his children, Ruth (Stetson) Small; his second wife, Janice (Guptill) Small; his brothers, Maurice and Floyd; and one sister, Florence. Eldridge is survived by his daughter, Katherine Swinton and husband, Wayne, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and his son, Eldridge Small and wife, Susan, of Sebec. He leaves four grandchildren, Gary Swinton of Grand Haven, Mich., Arlo Swinton of New Hartford, Iowa, Sara Kristal-Brandon of Midland, Mich., and Jennifer Small of Riverview, Fla.; nine great-grandchildren, Jacob, Kaitlyn, Jessica, Andrew, Garrett, Gatlin, Stephanie, Cody, and Shaley. He is survived by one sister, Marrianne Hutchinson of Annapolis, Md.; and sister-in-laws, Ruth Small of Brewer and Genevieve Small of Bangor. Eldridge had many friends in Machiasport and surrounding towns, whom he enjoyed visiting with when he was able. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 29, at Hillside Cemetery, Bucks Harbor. Eldridge talked many times about wanting to hike the Appalachian Trail, which he never got to do. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Maine Appalachian Trail Club, P.O. Box 283, Augusta, ME 04332-0283. Arrangements are under the care of Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Machias.
