MILLINOCKET – Donald E. Helstrom Sr., 86, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006, at a Howland health care facility. He was born Jan. 20, 1920, in LaGrange, to Edwin and Ethel (Kidney) Helstrom. Donald was a graduate of Stearns High School, Millnocket, Class of 1938. He was a veteran of World War II, during which time he served in the U.S. Army, 10th Mountain Division. Donald retired from the B&A Railroad in 1979 after 38 years of service. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and skier. He loved his family, camp life and the art of storytelling. Donald is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Grace E. (Poirer) Helstrom of Millinocket; two sons, Donald E. Helstrom Jr. and his wife, Gail, of Woodville and Kenneth R. Helstrom of Millinocket; a brother, Cecil Helstrom of Bangor; four grandchildren, Laura E. Manzo of Millinocket, Ursula Hawkes of Brewer, Mary Beth Helstrom of Harrisonburg, Va., and Derek R. Helstrom of Hampden; four great-grandchildren, Clayton, Melissa and Zachary Manzo, all of Millinocket and Eric McCarthy of Brewer; and many special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Friends are invited to visit with the family 7-9 p.m. Monday at Bouchard – Lamson Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, with the Rev. Rudy Homchuck officiating. Interment, with military honors, will be at Millinocket Cemetery, Millinocket.
