SCARBOROUGH – Anthony E. Lepore, MD, 85, of Piper Shores, Scar-borough formerly of Gardiner, died Wednesday evening at Piper Shores after a long illness. He was born in Everett, Mass., a son of Raphael and Giovanna Christofero Lepore who were emigrants from a small mountain village near Naples, Italy. Tony was proud of his Italian heritage and had fond memories of his mother singing Italian opera as she worked around the home and garden. At a young age his family moved to North Abington, Mass., where he attended local schools and St. Bridget’s Roman Catholic Church. After graduating from high school he chose to go to Tuft’s College (now Tuft’s University) as a pre-med student. After graduation, he was received in the Phi Beta Kappa Society and entered Tuft’s Medical School. He graduated in 1943 with the honor of becoming a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. In June 23, 1943, he entered the U.S Army. In 1944 he would marry the former Ophelia Duguay who was a student nurse at Somerville Hospital. In 1945, he joined his unit in the Philippines where he served until his discharge in September 1946. In 1947, Dr. Lepore started his family practice in Gardiner, where he practiced until his retirement in 1989. He was a former communicant of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Gardiner. He also developed an interest in photography and left his family with many images of his life and travel. His passport was always valid and he enjoyed traveling to many historic places. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Ralph and John Lepore. In addition to his wife of 59 years of Scarborough, he leaves two sons, Anthony Francis Lepore of Clinton, John Christopher Lepore of Bernardston, Mass.; two daughters, Claire Lepore-Earley of Richmond, Vt., Giovanna M. Lepore of Canaan, N.H.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s the Evangelist Catholic Church, South Portland. Interment will be at a later date in Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. Those wishing to send a tribute in Dr. Lepore’s memory may do so at www.mem.com.
